Meeting Icebreakers

It's still early in the school year and the students in your council/chapter might not be all that comfortable with each other. Meetings are a great time to get to know the students you're working with and it's their opportunity to focus on each other. It's hard to truly learn about the people you're working with when you're busy selling tickets at the door, sorting canned food, etc... While you certainly can learn someone's leadership style and a bit about their overall personality, what about who they REALLY ARE? Mixers used at the beginning or middle of meetings serve a variety of purposes.

An update on Q chill

The creators of Q chil: the 2007 Level 3 Council!By Mitch Matthews
co-creator of Q

We're All Over This State!

Your State Board of Delegates comes to you from every corner of Michigan and they're ready to talk to YOU about your association. Check out who your Center Representative is for MASC and/or MAHS and please contact them! They're looking for connections to you too... Send them the name of a student contact (preferably a sophomore or junior) and they'll communicate with that student on a regular basis about events, contests, awards and more. Not sure which Center you are in? We have a map, don't you worry!

Charity of the Year

Alternatives in Motion was founded in 1995 by Johnnie Tuitel to provide for unmet mobility needs. After recovering from a major surgery, Johnnie learned he needed a new wheelchair and that his insurance company had denied him coverage for it. Johnnie was furious because he knew if this was happening to him, it was happening to others as well. He teamed up with George Ranville, a Grand Rapids native who went through a similar experience getting a wheelchair for his brother-in-law. The two started raising money and making their cause known. Since that time Alternatives in Motion has been able to help people in 150 Michigan communities.

The Mission: To provide wheelchairs to individuals who do not qualify for other assistance, and who could not obtain such equipment without financial aid.

Alternatives in Motion is a privately funded organization that relies on donations from schools, businesses, and individuals for support. Without this assistance, our organization simply could not exist. We accept new and gently used mobility equipment as well as financial contributions. Whether it is a little or a lot, your donation will help someone get the assistance they need.

The Staff and Board of Directors for Alternatives in Motion is honored that the Michigan Association of Student Councils and the Michigan Association of Honor Societies has selected Alternatives in Motion as their charity of the year for the 2007-2008 school year. With your help we can provide the gift of mobility for those in need. There are many great ways to raise money for charity and we would love to help make your fundraising efforts successful. Contact Alternatives in Motion to coordinate your Charity of the Year fundraising event. Please email info@alternativesinmotion.org or give us a call at (888) 302-7463.  For more information check out our web site at: www.alternativesinmotion.org.

Thank you for helping the MASC/MAHS leadership team reach their $150,000 goal!

RSVP Training in Michigan

On October 8, 2007, 5 schools gathered to receive training on a great new school improvement program called RSVP: Raising Student Voice and Participation. The schools in attendance: Grayling HS, Grand Blanc HS East, Franklin (Livonia) HS, Milan HS and Hudsonville HS. These schools spent a half-day in Lansing preparing to take back to their schools a program that will provide an avenue for student-led changes and school improvement. What's so special about this program? It actually allows every student, yes, EVERY STUDENT in the school, to have a voice.
